continue to function, unless you switch to a new operating function that doesn’t
recognise it. Ancestry is also considering partnerships with other companies to
all the tree syncing feature on the website to continue. The 1939 Register has been dubbed ‘The Wartime Domesday Book’ - it is the most comprehensive survey of the population of England and Wales ever taken.
The 1921 census is the next one due to be released, but that isn’t scheduled till 2021. The 1931 Census was taken, but was destroyed in a fire. And the 1941 Census was never taken due to war going on … so the next one that was taken (and that survives) is the 1951. So the 1939 Register fills this gap nicely.
The 1939 Register was a one-off survey of the public. The war with Germany had just started and officials had little time to lose in preparing for the fighting and privations to come. So on 29 September 1939, just 26 days after hostilites had been declared, a survey nicknamed the UK’s only “instant census” took place. 65,000 enumerators were employed to visit every house in England and Wales to take stock of the civil population.
The findings enabled the issuing of identity cards and ration cards, plan mass evacuations and co-ordinate other war-time provisions - and the register applied to ALL citizens. In the longer term, the 1939 Register would go on to play a central role in the establishment of post-war services like the NHS.
The details the 1939 Register requested were:
– Name
– Sex
– Age
– Occupation
– Address (at the time off filling in the form)
– Marital status
– Membership of navel, military or air force reserves, auxiliary forces or civil defence services or reserves.
It is these individual returns for England and Wales that have been digitised by Findmypast and made available on their database. There are 7,000 volumes, which totals about 41 million records.
As well as the original record image, Find my Past has also added maps, facts and figures and photos of the time to further increase the value of this resource. You will be able to see who lived in the household – although some records are closed due to being younger than 100 years old and still alive. You can choose to unlock these records to access additional information.
Interactive maps show how a neighbourhood has changed over the past 130 years Local and national newspaper articles from 1939, give an insight into the world at this time. Photographs document life in 1930s and 1940s England and Wales. Facts and figures compare average ages, occupations and popular names compared to the rest of the country.
For more about these significant records, read the BBC’s article about the Register.

Many Genealogical Databases now offer the facilities to upload your family trees to their database, allowing other family history researchers the option to view and use your research. If you do use someone else's information, please double check that it is correct. You cannot assume that the person uploading the family tree has it right. In one search recently we were looking for information on Jane Chadwick. When her name was entered in Ancestry.com we found 12,013 family trees containing that name. In checking the first page, where 20 family trees were displayed - 18 referred to our Jane Chadwick and the other 2 were clearly a different Jane. Just using those 18 references, Jane's birth year varied from 1811, 1814 to 1817. The spouse varied from John Belcher & John Whaley to John Whealey and others. Not all gave their sources, but some thankfully did and also added other records. By going through all those trees and viewing all the records referenced, we were able to compare them to the information we already had and draw our own conclusions. We have been unable to find any record of her birth, but the 1828 census gives her age as 14 - making her birth year 1814. In 1828, John Belcher, a convict, applied to marry an underage 15 year old Jane Chadwick, so perhaps she was born in 1813, but still 14 at the time of the census, or she lied about her age. This marriage never took place and John Belcher later died in 1835. In 1832 and subsequent years, she had children to John Whaley and she eventually married him in 1846. John Whaley had been in trouble with the law and had several aliases - Whalan & Whealey are just two. She died in 1880, drowning after a falling from Manly Pier. The inquest gave her age as 63, leading to the birth year of 1817. Jane led a very hard and colourful life in a rough rural setting, with little female influence. From the documents available we can piece together some facts about her life, but the rest is conjecture.FranIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891852609654837772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5151395402330880158.post-37026044233985994832015-07-27T16:14:00.000-07:002015-07-27T16:31:34.500-07:00YouTube

It was my husband's mother, who passed away after a long illness at the age of 91. We then spent Easter organising her funeral, but it was some of the questions we were asked for information to be included on the death certificate that really stumped us. What was your mother's mother's maiden name? i.e. grandmother's maiden name. What was your mother's father's occupation? When did she come to Australia?
My mother-in-law was born in England in 1923, served in the RAF at Mount Batten, Plymouth, where she met her future husband, an Australian stationed there, and came out to Australia to join her husband in 1946. The only member of her family that we had met was her younger sister, now 87 and living in England. We really didn't know much at all, and had neglected to ask the relevant questions when we could. We knew she had come to Australia in 1946, but not the actual date. We were told that if we just put 1946, the date would automatically adjust to 1/1/1946, and we thought that would be misleading for future generations.
Firstly we went through all paperwork we could find, and found not only my mother-in-law's birth certificate, but also her marriage certificate and a copy of her parent's marriage certificate. From these we found her mother's maiden name - Gillard. (So we could be related to Julia - she came from England as well). Her father was a grave digger, but we could find nothing about when she arrived in Australia. So we turned to FindMyPast.com.au and found her on Passenger Lists leaving UK 1890-1960, but to get the information we needed credits or a subscription. So off we went to our local library, where we could access the information for free, and found the name of the ship she came out on and that it left London on 31 October 1946. [A note about searching, when using her full name we got fewer results, but when we just searched using surname and an initial, we found the information we were after.] Once we had the name of the ship, we checked Trove for shipping arrivals and found she arrived in Sydney on 4th December 1946. So with some family history detective work we were able to provide all the information required and ensure it was the correct information for future family historians.FranIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891852609654837772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5151395402330880158.post-70060718073268412972015-03-29T21:30:00.002-07:002015-03-29T21:30:27.333-07:001901 Irish Census

my last post – Findmypast has
announced that it has added the 1901 Irish Census to their records. This is the
earliest surviving complete Irish census. You are able to search all variations
of a name and narrow your results by date of birth. You can also search for two
members of the same household at the same time. Don't forget that you can access Findmypast free of charge at Manly Library and most public libraries.

I have already listed many in previous posts. Findmypast has one of the largest collections of Irish family history records available online, containing Irish censuses, parish records, Irish newspapers and more. You can search at Findmypast - this is a subscription based database, but they frequently have free trials available, or you can access the website at Manly Library and other public libraries free of charge. Irish records on Findmypast include Ireland Censuses from 1821 to 1851 that survived the fire at the Four courts in 1922; Ireland Census Search Forms for 1841 & 1851, which were used to verify the ages of people applying for an old age pension in 1909 and contain extra information on Irish families; Griffith's Valuation 1847-1864, with details of who owned or rented land in Ireland; Landed Estates Court Rentals 1850-1885 lists those with bankrupt estates amongst over 500,000 tenants on more than 8,000 estates across Ireland; the Elliott collection contains parish registers from County Fermanagh and cemetery records fro Donegal, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Wicklow; Poverty Relief Fund records cover the micro credit scheme set up in 1824 to provide small loans to the 'industrious poor'. Local committees administered the scheme and kept copious records about people who received loans. Nearly 700,000 names are recorded in these files and they give a snapshot of life including age, occupation and fiscal history. occasionally more detail is given, including degree of destitution, family circumstances, emigration and death. These records also span the period of the Famine (1945-51). There is a range of National Irish Newspapers, including The Freeman's Journal, Ireland's longest running national publication which merged into The Irish Independent in 1924. The collection now stand at a total of over 7.2 million articles and 68 different titles from the 1740s onwards. The newspapers are easy to use as they have been digitised and indexed.
Something I missed in the previous post is that National Library
of Ireland is undertaking a massive digitisation of Irish Records. The
NLI is in the process of digitising more than 400,000 images of Catholic parish
registers which it will make available on-line free of charge. This project is
already being described as “the most significant ever digitisation project for
Irish genealogy” and the <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">NLI is expecting
records to be available as early as the middle of 2015. The digital images due
to be published by the NLI will be searchable by parish location only. They
will not be transcribed or indexed by the NLI, and the images will be of the
microfilms of the original registers, which – in some cases – were in poor
condition when the microfilming took place. The images will be in black and white.
The information in the registers varies from parish
to parish but, typically, includes the dates of the baptisms or marriages, and
the names of the key people involved, including godparents or witnesses.

The
National Library of Australia (NLA) has
undertaken an innovative digital library program to redevelop its
infrastructure in order to manage its huge digital collections and provide
access to collections from hundreds of libraries across its network. The
library is expanding its online and mobile services for Australian and
international users. More than 70,000 people use its Trove service each day and
22 million users were clocked up last year.
Over 3 petabytes of content is being accessed online and through mobile
devices. This content includes more than 13 million digitised newspapers and
hundreds of thousands of digitised Australiana items. Access to the Library’s
digital content is through Trove, a free
discovery and engagement service that also integrates content from more than
1000 libraries, museums, archives and research organisations. Trove offers online access to a vast catalogue of online books, newspapers, maps, music and
journal articles. Trove has more than 7000 Twitter followers and tweets feature
items of interest in the national collection. The NLA’s main twitter account
has more than 23,000 followers. The NLA is the fourth most followed Australian
government organisation and the most followed cultural institution. Using
social media has proved an effective way of getting the NLA collections to
online users, as increasingly, library users are online or using mobile and
smart devices to download or share content. You can read more about this

We have been spoiled in NSW with ease of searching historical registrations of births, deaths & marriages. The new search facility was to offer improvements, but they have been slow in coming and users have had to learn some new techniques to get the best use from the site.
The website address is still http:www.bdm.nsw.gov.au & from this main page go to the Family History Tab. There is no longer an annual release of registrations, but access is now available to births over 100 years old, marriages more than 50 years old and deaths more than 30 years old.
The wildcard function has been restored. You can use '?' or '*'
e.g. Anders?n to search for Anderson or Andersen (The ? replaces one character)
or Thom* will search for Thompson, Thomson, Thomas, Thomms etc. (The * replaces multiple characters)
A Soundex search facility is supposed to be coming.
You need to select your search i.e. Birth, death or Marriage. You are required to enter both a Surname and Given name, however if you use the wildcard *, it will help you get around this. e.g. Surname: Anderson & Given Name: * - so you get all the Andersons in the data base. Don't forget to enter a specific date or a date range. e.g. 21/4/1890 or 1/1/1890 to 31/6/1890. this will help narrow down your results.
There is a step-by-step guide to make better use of the website, but you won't get any helpful hints when using the search facility. The site is being continually improved, so users just need to be patient as better functionality is introduced.

FranIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891852609654837772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5151395402330880158.post-81395176072530899152014-10-12T20:33:00.001-07:002014-10-12T20:33:24.061-07:00NSW Probate Notices now onlineUp until last year, NSW Probate notices had to be published in a newspaper. This requirement has now ceased. It is now optional, however it is a requirement of the Supreme Court of NSW that Probate Notices appear on its website at https://onlineregistry.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/content/probate-notices
This is still relatively new, but should become a useful tool for family historians to check for recent deaths. You can enter quite a broad search, e.g. a surname, and the results screen will show you the full name of the deceased, their location, date of death and date that the application for probate was lodged. Clicking on their name (which is hyperlinked) opens a new screen which shows who applied for Probate, Letters of Administration etc. Although you don't get additional information such as the occupation of the deceased, at least you get an indication of where they lived and the exact date of death. You can also search by a place or postcode rather than a name. It records applications for probate which occurred after 21 January 2013 although the death may have occurred much earlier.FranIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891852609654837772noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5151395402330880158.post-80337693556681392782014-10-12T16:53:00.000-07:002014-10-12T16:53:09.151-07:0014th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry

on Genealogy and Heraldry” otherwise known simply as “Congress” is Australia’s
largest genealogy conference. Organised by <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 140%;">AFFHO

Australian or New Zealand city.

This next congress will be <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">held
from Thursday 26 – Monday 30 March 2015 in Canberra, ACT

It’s not BIG in the same sense as
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 140%;">RootsTech in the US, that can attract 10,000-15,000 people, but it
is big for Australia. And for anyone that is wanting to learn everything they
can about genealogy, take this opportunity to learn from so many experts.

Being in Canberra next is a plus
for attendees, as it is Australia’s mecca for archives - The National Library
of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the Australian War Memorial,
the National Film & Sound Archives, the National Museum of Australia, the
Noel Butlin Archives Centre to mention a few.

If you bring along your
non-genealogy family, there’s plenty of
things for them to do while you’re busy at the conference (<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 140%;">http://www.visitcanberra.com.au/).

It is a four day conference, which
makes the travel worthwhile. The length of the conference gives you ample time
to meet, hear and learn from 34 world-renowned guest presenters. Many of these
are Australian and New Zealand speakers, but there’s also quite a number of
expert presenters from the northern hemisphere who’re making their way to
Australia’s capital. For the speaker list, <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 140%;">click here.

A wide variety of topics will be
covered, so there really is something for everyone, including subjects for the beginner
through to the advanced. program there will be exhibitors as well.

You will get to meet, mix and
mingle with many other genealogists, throughout the day, or at the various
other social functions that Congress has organised.

The $550 cost is very reasonable
for a four day conference, but if it is beyond your means, or you can’t attend
for the full length of time, you can opt for just a single day for $140. There
is also an EARLY BIRD PRICE of $495 if you book by 31
October 2014.

part of its genealogy website last month, after the country's data
protection commissioner warned that potentially sensitive personal details were
available to all.
Irish
Genealogy, a website
created by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, offered people
born or married in Ireland the ability to search for civil records such as
birth certificates as part of their research into their heritage. But those records contain data
such as dates of birth and mothers' maiden names, information which is
frequently used as security questions for accounts such as online banking. That
information is not legally defined as "sensitive" under Irish data
protection law, but the commission stepped in to prevent the data anyway.
Billy Hawkes, the Irish data
protection commissioner, said his office had been consulted on the site, but
that it had not been made clear that the information available would be
contemporary as well as historical.
The information contained on
the website has always been publicly available, but before online access to
civil records was turned on, it had required payment of a fee to get a copy of
an individual record. But online, free searches offered the potential of
malicious actors bulk downloading data in an effort to match up information
with records from other sources.
The site, which only launched
the search on Thursday 3 July, now notes that "Civil Records Search [is] temporarily unavailable …
Further update will be provided."
In March 2013, when the Irish
Genealogy site launched, it focused on historical records, offering users the
ability to search the 1901 and 1911 censuses.FranIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891852609654837772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5151395402330880158.post-68823343619226866512014-08-25T23:18:00.000-07:002014-08-25T23:20:11.435-07:00Teapot GenealogyKaye Vernon & Billie Jacobsen, of Teapot Genealogy, have been indexing

on the FamilySearch International Indexing Day –
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">A new record was set with
66,511 volunteers participating. While there was a minimum requirement for
participation - a single batch of indexing or arbitration work - it is appears
that many volunteers continued working throughout the day as they produced the
second-highest combined (indexed or arbitrated) total of submitted records at
just over 5.7 million, which is a monumental crowd-sourcing effort. So now is
the time to check <span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font: major-fareast;">FamilySearch
again with nearly 6 million records recently indexed.FranIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891852609654837772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5151395402330880158.post-50540233734440316162014-07-14T17:31:00.000-07:002014-07-14T17:32:02.485-07:00Worldwide Indexing Day<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-themecolor: text1;">FamilySearch will run its next ‘worldwide
indexing day’ on Monday July 21. This has been held for the past few years and
is intended to <span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">inspire
many to start indexing, while also prompting existing indexers to do a little
more (at least on that day). <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">FamilySearch, on average adds about 500,000 images to their website a
week, and through their current volunteer indexers they get about a million
entries indexed in the same timeframe. A single scanned image might have one
name on it, or it might have fifty names on it – it simply depends on the type
of document, so you’ll see that there’s a whole lot of indexing that needs
doing. Worldwide indexing day runs for 24 hours and starts on Sunday <span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-themecolor: text1;">July
20, 6pm MDT time
in the US, which for us here in Australia translates to <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Monday July 21, 10am
(AEST).

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">If you are interested in indexing, you don’t have to wait to the
last minute to get involved. You can get started right away. Do
some practicing before the July 21, 2014 Indexing Event.

to make it easier for families to find relatives killed in the first world war,
including the release of 300,000 original documents. The documents include
details of personal headstone inscriptions, date of death, rank, and regiment.
Some will give details of the journey of the deceased to their final resting
place. They can be seen on the CWCG
website. The commission's new Discover 14-18 microsite is designed to enable the public to visit
the memorial sites more easily. The site will also feature a timeline and
calendar of events and major battles of the first world war. The commission is
responsible for marking and caring for more than 1.7m war graves. It operates
in over 23,000 locations in 153 countries across all continents except for
Antarctica.FranIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891852609654837772noreply@blogger.com0
